As Executive Chef, Culinary Experiences you will be the visionary creative innovator of all culinary experiences across campus - Kitchen Table, Common Grounds Café, The Teaching Kitchen, Joanie's Garden, and Private Events. Stellar leadership skills are required to energize 1440's Culture Principles while developing a positive work environment that ensures growth and development of team who help fulfill the organization's mission and vision.

In addition to the assigned duties below, you will ensure delivery of quality guest experiences, be a positive influence with guests and colleagues, actively support and respect direction by senior leadership, be accountable to performance of your job responsibilities, and ensure adherence to established standards and protocol throughout campus. As a 1440 leader, you must display sound business acumen, authentic leadership skills, and proactively contribute to the success of your department and division's quantitative and qualitative business goals and fiduciary responsibilities.

The expectation is that you will make a positive difference within our organization by stimulating sensory-experiences for your fellow 1440 team members, our guests, and in our community by demonstrating the highest level of hospitality, story-telling ability, and professionalism that advances our mission and vision.

What You'll Do:

  • Innovate Epicurean Culinary Experiences: Stay true and passionate towards a plant-based approach to "food as medicine" while pushing the boundaries of sensory dining with oversight and approval of all menu and recipe development for culinary experiences across campus. Design curriculum for learning programs and culinary educational experiences that emphasize the importance of gathering in community to inspire guests to source and cook with high-quality natural ingredients at home to live healthier lives.
  • Culinary Planning & Education: Create and innovative diverse menu offerings, interactive food learning opportunities, immersive "foodie" experiences, cooking demonstrations, educational nutrition courses, and other engaging sensory culinary events. Elevate 1440 to the forefront of sustainable and wholesome cuisine education to teach guests, students, and children how to garden, develop cooking skills and nourish their bodies by having a natural relationship with healthy food and ingredients.
  • Sustainable and Local: Forge foundational relationships with producers, purveyors, and farms within a 300-mile radius that are dedicated to cultivating organic produce, harvesting fruits and vegetables at their peak of freshness, humanely raising grass-fed animals, and honoring the value of quality over quantity to reduce the carbon footprint. Maintain ethical, sustainable farming practices on campus and ensure all partners are committed to preserving the nutritional value of the food, maintain the food's integrity, protect the land and crops from harmful chemicals.
  • F&B Operational Excellence: Demonstrate knowledge of current and emerging consumer and culinary trends - capability to apply this knowledge in the development of educational strategies and new product offerings that drive culinary innovation and improve culinary skills throughout the organization with a continuous improvement mindset. Lead by example as a working chef to mentor others, elevate guest experiences and gain observational insights to implement operational process improvements. Develops, administers, and conducts culinary and menu training programs with 1440 staff to mentor their personal growth and professional development.
  • Business Optimization: Support initiatives and tactics that optimize achievement of established monthly financial objectives and annual budgets. Work closely with senior leadership to meet targeted financial goals, maintain oversight over P&L responsibilities, manage monthly expenses and always prioritize the strategic goals and business objectives of the organization. Meet and maintain OSHA regulatory compliance, proper health sanitation expectations, and follow safety protocol and emergency procedures.
  • Leadership Administration: Be a positive role model and build positive team morale; keep conversations professional in the workplace, resolve issues, and know when to escalate concerns to senior leadership, while still being part of the solution. Manage the F&B selection process to ensure prospective team members meet all requirements. Develop, implement, and maintain a departmental orientation program for new hires to receive thorough training to successfully perform their job. Administer performance appraisals for all direct reports. Ensures campus policies are administered fairly and consistently - administer disciplinary procedures and documentation according to Standard and Local Operating Procedures (SOPs and LSOPs) - and collaborate with HR as necessary. Ensure team members maintain a professional appearance, engage in meaningful conversation with guests, and always exhibit a respectful decorum.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of experience working in a multi-unit organization known for culinary excellence
  • Ability to innovate and implement fresh organic plant-forward menu items and concepts
  • Vision to establish and maintain a well-balanced nutritious culinary program
  • Excellent culinary leadership skills - demonstrated public speaking ability
  • Ability to manage external and internal resources to get the job done
  • Excellent verbal, written communication, interpersonal, and training skills
  • Ability and experience in analysis, KPI's, food cost management, and kitchen labor
  • Willingness to work cross-functionally and collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders
  • Eager to work in a fast-paced client-facing organization - this is working position
  • Maintain a flexible schedule and to adapt to the business needs of 1440 and its guests - mornings, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as business demand dictates
  • Must be able to create and maintain positive relationships at all levels of service and distribution
  • Enthusiastic about process improvement and customer service
  • Must obtain or current hold California Food Handler's Card holder and TIPS certification
